Wendy and David Gain Independence Through Supported Employment

Wendy and David light up every time they walk into work at the UT Martin dining hall — and it’s easy to see why. They love their jobs, and their positive energy is contagious.

They’re a part of SJCS’s Supported Employment Program, which helps them with their jobs at the dining hall on the UT Martin campus. Together, they have dedicated more than 30 years to the UT Martin dining room, bringing joy to faculty and staff alike!

"They're always in a good mood," Job Coach Tammy Wallace said about the two. Tammy has been with St. John’s for over five years, providing guidance to Wendy and David to help them succeed in their jobs.

"They're always saying hi to everyone. That drew me to them more than anything else. It was the reason why I chose to come to St. John’s," Tammy shared.

David works in the kitchen, ensuring that all dishes are clean and ready for use by students and staff.

Meanwhile, Wendy manages the dining room, where she cleans tables and restocks condiments and napkins.

"Being with the program, it shows them how to be independent," Sous chef, Agentry Perry, mentioned. "We give them tasks that they must complete in a [proper] time."

Agentry further explained that they are treated fairly and equally to other workers. And the greatest value they bring lies in the relationships they build with the students on campus. The students love Wendy and David, who love being around the students just as much.

Your support makes it possible for Wendy and David to confidently pursue jobs they love and live their best lives!
