Creating Space to Heal: The Day Program That Changed Tiffany’s Life

Tiffany embodies the transformative power of the St. John’s Community Services Day Program in Washington, DC. Her story illustrates the incredible outcomes that arise when individuals are seen, supported, and given the space to flourish.

When Tiffany first joined the program, she faced significant challenges. “There were times Tiffany came in ready to punch you in the face — she woke up mad, having had a bad night,” shared Takiesha Dawson, Day Program Lead.

“Now, she’s learning to communicate her emotions more effectively …  expressing her feelings instead of acting them out.”

A smiling woman sits beside her support staff, both proudly holding a poster for the Guy Mason Spring Art Exhibition. Colorful paintings and artwork are displayed in the background, highlighting a joyful and creative atmosphere.

Through the program’s art classes, Tiffany discovered not just a creative outlet, but a way to process her emotions. During an expressive art session, she asked, “So I can get my depression out on this?” She received encouragement: “Absolutely. Put it on the canvas. Let it go.”

And she did just that. Tiffany created pieces so powerful that they moved many. In a recent art show featuring 31 works, 28 sold, including two bought by Takiesha.

“I loved how one of her pieces had real hair attached to the portrait, giving the character an afro. I thought that was kind of cool … someone actually took the time to do that.”

Beyond her art, Tiffany set and achieved personal goals, including losing 20 to 25 pounds. “She’s learning to work through her issues rather than letting them control her. That’s the growth I admire the most.”

Tiffany’s journey is a remarkable testament to healing, creativity, and resilience, continuing to unfold with every smile, brushstroke, and goal accomplished.
