Jessica

Second Chances

Jessica spent her life in academia, a doctoral student who fell on hard times during the pandemic. She leaned into a relationship with a man she had only known for a short period of time. Worried and financially struggling, Jessica moved in with him.

That relationship became almost instantly abusive. So much so that Jessica feared for her life. She made the decision to leave and live on the streets. It wasn’t really a choice … life on the streets or abuse. Jessica knew she had to choose the streets.

Jessica endured the elements and lived in fear of being harmed and exposed to severe weather with nowhere else to turn. Then she found the SJCS Ithaca Shelter, where she received safe shelter, meals, and access to community resources.

“I would’ve been dead.”

— Jessica said, matter of factly as she described what the future would’ve been like if she hadn’t found the SJCS homeless shelter.

Caring individuals are working with her on the next steps to get her life back on track. Jessica deserves a second chance at rebuilding her life. Thanks to your support and our homeless services, she can heal from her trauma and leave homelesssnes behind!

The past few years have shown how close each of us could be to losing our safety and stability. Because of you, individuals and families experiencing homelessness can recieve compassion, kindness, and support at the SJCS Ithaca shelter!
