Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
Celebrating People Living with Disabilities During Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
March is a special month for us here at St. John's Community Services. March represents Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM), and we're prepared to offer heartfelt opportunities to raise awareness about developmental disabilities.
Established in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan and coordinated by the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD), DDAM encourages us to come together to build a more supportive and compassionate society, celebrating the incredible potential of individuals with developmental disabilities.
Long before DDAM was nationally recognized, SJCS was already leading the charge for change. In the early 80s, SJCS began trailblazing in the District of Columbia to deinstitutionalize adults living with disabilities and advocate for their right to live in their communities.
“We recognized well before many other organizations, government and private alike, that the best thing we could do for people with disabilities was to have them be fully included in all aspects of community life.”
GEORGE LIACOPOULOS, DEPUTY CEO OF SJCS
Since then, we have remained innovative and progressive, breaking down barriers so that adults living with disabilities can live and work in the communities of their choice.
This month is dedicated to honoring the unique achievements of individuals living with disabilities while advocating for their rights and needs.
It allows us to deepen our understanding of the experiences faced by people with developmental disabilities and their families and to promote communities of belonging.
We understand the challenges they confront and strive to advocate for policies and services that support their well-being and independence.
During this month, we will share stories about the individuals in our community who are living their best lives. It is important for us to not only educate our supporters, but also let them know how their generosity is helping create better lives for individuals in our community.
