Lisa, Theresa, and Dawn
No Limitations
For parents or guardians of people living with disabilities, it’s a difficult decision to decide who will take care of their loved one throughout their life.
For Dawn’s adopted mother, the choice was easy. She left Dawn in the care of her two colleagues, Lisa and Theresa, who had adored Dawn since they met her many years prior.
And for Lisa and Theresa, now Dawn’s guardians, the question of “who” would take care of Dawn as she aged was top of mind.
Dawn has been receiving services from SJCS for many years. She has been part of our community program and utilizes our employment services, too. When it came time for Dawn to move into her own place, her guardians decided they felt safe putting her in our care.
“I think the greatest gift is … we have services like St. John’s that put the person first. Dawn is not just her limitations, Dawn is so much more and has such gifts to offer the world.”
— Theresa, Dawn’s guardian
It's a difficult decision for loved ones to make … who will take care and love your child as much as you do? Who will make sure they have every opportunity to achieve their highest level of independence and live a life they love? SJCS is the answer for so many families and it was certainly the answer for Dawn and her guardians.
Dawn is living her best life, enjoys her roommates and works at a job in her community that she loves. Knowing that Dawn isn’t just cared for, but truly thriving, gives Lisa and Theresa joy to watch and peace of mind for the future.
