Adult Services
St. John's Community Services (SJCS) provides opportunities for adults with developmental and other disabilities to develop the skills and relationships that enable them to become active participants in their communities. All services are provided in the community with supports from SJCS staff and community partners that give people with disabilities opportunities to learn and interact with people without disabilities.
Throughout all services, we strive to support people with disabilities to make decisions, build relationships, utilize community resources, and realize their own dreams. SJCS provides homes, career and job opportunities, as well as community activities resulting in unique experiences for each individual.
COMMUNITY LIVING SERVICES
Support is provided for people with disabilities and their families to make choices regarding the communities in which they will live, the type of housing, and their housemates. In community living, the health and safety of the people supported is paramount. Staff are highly trained and well supervised. Staffing is provided according to the need of the person served and can vary from drop-in to 24-hour care. Residences are regarded as belonging to the individuals who live in them, not to the agency. Individuals are encouraged to participate in the management and care of their home and are encouraged to participate in their community, with staff support as needed.
COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION SERVICES
Unlike many more traditional day support programs, SJCS's Community Participation Services is a “program without walls.” People with disabilities become involved in their communities in a manner that allows them to develop relationships, skills, abilities and an improved sense of personal value. Staff supports individuals to learn new skills through community activities such as shopping, banking, using library services and other individualized activities. Participants can also choose to volunteer in their community while building a résumé for future employment. Staff supervision is provided at all times in this unique program.
SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT
Working in the community is an important component of SJCS programs. Employment Specialists work directly with the individual and his or her family, as appropriate, to assist with sound job selection and a positive work experience. Employment Specialists assess the support needed for the person to do the job successfully; assists the person to attain the job; provides on-the-job training for the individual, his or her employer and co-workers; and gives on-going support as needed, and career development. Individuals supported by SJCS have had successful work experiences in a wide variety of work settings, including major retail stores, restaurants, motels, day care centers, non-profit agencies and government agencies.
