In June 2000, St. John's Community Services (SJCS) began supporting a group of former residents of Pennhurst State Developmental Center to find competitive employment in their communities.  Pennsylvania Supported Employment, PASE, supports a diverse population, including people with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities; as well as people with various mental health issues in determining their career path and making their dreams a reality. SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT

Pennsylvania Supported Employment (PASE) is highly successful at supporting individuals with disabilities to meet their personal goals through learning about careers, exploring various job options, and obtaining and maintaining paid employment of their choice.  Through supported employment, people with disabilities are able to better determine the course of the lives. 

Being employed in community businesses allows for increased interaction with the public and greater opportunities to develop relationships in the community they have chosen to live and work in.  Maintaining a job supports the development of increased independence and enhances the individual worker’s self-esteem and sense of self-direction.  Being gainfully employed also allows people to make meaningful contributions back to their community.

SJCS-PA PASE services include comprehensive vocational assessments, career planning, job development and selection, on-the-job training, job coaching, and other life skills training.  Our staff works to meet the needs of both employees with a disability and employers, while gradually decreasing their presence on the job site and increasing the probability for a long-term employee-employer relationship.  We have successfully supported people with disabilities to attain jobs with various employers, such as Applebee’s, Boston Market, Country Club Dinner, GAP, Health Chiropractic, International House of Pancakes, McDonald's, Pennsylvania Department of Health, Pizzeria Uno, Staples, U.S. Postal Service, Temple of Christ and WOW Center.
