Our Organization

Today, St. John’s Community Services, a non-denominational, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) human services organization, supports over 450 children and adults with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities and their families in Washington, DC, Pennsylvania, West Tennessee, and Northern Virginia.  SJCS is governed (see Our Governance for membership of all Boards) by a Board of Trustees and a state Board of Directors appointed in each jurisdiction.  Our strength lies in the diversification of services and people, the adherence to rigorous quality systems, and board and staff member commitment.

Our goal is to build better communities by supporting people with disabilities to be integrated into all aspects of communities of their choosing.   We provide education services to school-age children within the public school environment and offer adults the opportunity to choose from an array of services including community living (residential services), employment and community participation (adult day services).  In addition, we have added in-home and case management services that enable people to remain in their home environments for as long as possible while receiving health and homemaker support.

To support such a range of service choices, SJCS has designed an internal monitoring and communication system and a corporate compliance and risk analysis process for service quality assurance.  These processes meet and exceed state licensure standards and assure that SJCS meets its own mission-related standards.  Externally, SJCS-VA is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for all of its services.  All other SJCS locations have received the highest standard ratings in their jurisdictions and are preparing for the CARF accreditation process.  In addition, our comprehensive technology and information systems support all quality systems.

When all is said and done, SJCS is about people—the people receiving services and the people supporting those with a disability.  SJCS has over 100 volunteer board members and 700 staff members.  Our Board members represent every ability, occupation, age, culture and race, and many are descendants of the early founding group. Our staff represents over 40 different countries, many with long tenure.  Over 50 staff have served over 10 years, while our core leadership averages over 25 years.  SJCS President/CEO, Tom Wilds, has served for nearly 30 years. Together, our board and staff members are a cohesive, dedicated unit constantly working to fulfill our mission.
