In-Home Services
SJCS-VA In-Home Services provides periodic support to adults with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities so that they may live independently in their own home or the home of their family in the community. The services provided, which may range from training on activities of daily living to utilizing community resources, are thoughtfully designed based on the needs and wishes of the individual supported and, where appropriate, his or her caregiver. SJCS staff are highly trained and provide the support required on an individual, one to one basis.
Participants choose to develop and maintain skills that result in more independent living. These include functional communication, social awareness, self-care, self-determination, and building relationships with peers.
With SJCS staff support, participants in In-Home Services typically engage in one or more of the following activities:
- self-care management (bathing, grooming, and dressing)
- household maintenance, such as meal preparation and budgeting
- community safety
- environmental awareness training
- recreation and leisure outings
Although many of the activities take place in the home, participants also learn and practice skills at community locations, such as libraries, banks, shopping malls, concerts, sporting events, and parks and recreation facilities.
In most cases an individual is deemed eligible for services by a Community Service Board (CSB) and then referred by a CSB Case Manager to licensed providers of In-Home Services. For private pay, the person should contact SJCS-VA directly. If the person chooses SJCS-VA as a provider of choice, either through the CSB or private pay, then SJCS provides the resources and support requested to meet the person’s needs, wants and desires to live a good life. No one is excluded based on disability.
