St. John’s Community Services has served the Washington, DC community since its founding in 1868.  In the 1950’s, St. John’s provided the first community-based alternative for children with intellectual disabilities (mental retardation) to Forest Haven, the state institution.  In the 1980s, SJCS established the first Extended School Year (ESY) services, included adults as well as children, opened group homes and initiated supported employment and began to transition from facility-based to community-based services.

Today, SJCS-DC provides comprehensive, community-based services for children and adults with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities.  These services include education for school-age children located within DCPS, and comprehensive array of services for adults to live, work, participate and develop relationships in their chosen communities.  SJCS-DC attained the highest ratings established by the District's Developmental Disabilities Administration and anticipates receving CARF accreditation, the internationally recognized accreditation body, in the Fall 20ll.
