St. John’s Community Services has served the Washington, DC community since its founding in 1868.  From that time to the present, SJCS has changed and adapted to meet evolving community needs.  In the 1950’s, St. John’s provided the first community-based alternative for children with intellectual disabilities (mental retardation) to Forest Haven, the state institution.  In the 1980s, St. John’s established the first Extended School Year (ESY) services in the District, subsequently writing the ESY policies and procedures that were adopted by the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS). At the same time,SJCS diversified its services  expanding to include adults as well as children and making a significant shift away from facility-based to community-based services.  SJCS opened group homes, in part to accommodate individuals with disabilities leaving Forest Haven, and was at the forefront of initiating supported employment in the District of Columbia.

Today, SJCS-DC provides comprehensive, community-based services for children and adults with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities.  These services include education and skill development for school-age children located within DCPS, and a comprehensive array of services for adults to live, work, participate and develop relationships in communities of their choosing.
